Mercury loves being in Libra! Good conversations, sharing one’s truth, finding common ground – what could be better? Individuals with this position are good listeners and communicators – if they deal with their resistance to conflict. The shadow side of Libra is a fear of rocking the boat and a tendency to people please. When this happens, Mercury in Libra does not get what it most wants – an open and honest sharing of oneself with another.
In the language of Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Mercury is Thoth, the Sacred Scribe. Libra is aligned with Ma’at, goddess of truth, justice, and balance. Her primary myth involves the passage of the newly deceased through the underworld, where Ma’at will weigh their heart on her scale. To gain entry to the Du’at – the Egyptian version of heaven - the heart of the newly deceased soul must be lighter than Ma’at’s feather.
To find a true lightness of heart, one must be truthful. The medicine of Ma’at includes not only the joyful aspects of life but also the painful. Communication is not just being on the same page with another person, it is also the painstaking and difficult process of working through disagreements and finding common ground. This is both the highest expression and the challenge of Mercury/Thoth emanating through Libra/Ma’at.
