The Mercury retrograde experience begins when Mercury is stationary. Communication and transportation systems start to slow down; obstacles and delays appear. It takes more time to get where we want to go and say what we want to say.
In the language of Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Mercury is Thoth, the creator of language, writing and time. It may seem surprising to list time with language and writing, both of which are very Mercurial pursuits. Yet it is relevant. Our experience of time is interconnected with the workings of our mind.
Time is relative. If we fly off to Mars and continue to measure time by Earth standards, it slows down dramatically. During Mercury retrograde periods, our experience of time here on Earth is meant to slow down. The common manifestations – missed appointments, technology breakdowns, misunderstandings – are a consequence of our insistence on keeping to a schedule, no matter what. Tempers flare as we push against the time stream, rather than flowing with it.
During Mercury retrograde periods, we are meant to go inward. If we understand the opportunity we are being given, we allow ourselves to slow down. We revisit what we have done in the recent past (the last three months) and look for ways to reroute and redo. We go on an inner vacation – a sort of retreat – where instead of striving to make things happen, we listen to internal messages that will inform the next phase of our work and lives. Our experience of time is not meant to be static – it is meant to ebb and flow. This is Thoth’s gift to us; one that we do not always know how to receive.
Mercury will be retrograde in the sign of Aquarius from January 30 to February 20. The best use of this time will be to consider your role within a group or collective.
