December 1, 2024: New Moon at Sagittarius 9°33’, 1:21 am.
This New Moon arrives with Mercury recently turned retrograde (November 25) in Sagittarius and in a T-square with the on-going Jupiter/Saturn square. The tension defined by the approaching square of Jupiter and Saturn (expansion vs contraction) will increase over the next two weeks as we move toward the Gemini Full Moon (December 15).
The tension is amplified by the opposition of Mars in Leo to Pluto, newly in Aquarius. This opposition has been in effect since the end of October. The energy of this transit can be described as The Warrior (Set in the Egyptian pantheon) in an on-going struggle with The Lord of the Underworld (Osiris). In Egyptian myth Set murders Osiris, his brother. That murder leads to a long battle between Set and Horus, son of Osiris and Isis. Horus eventually wins and ascends to the throne, initiating a New Aeon.
There are battles raging all around us – ranging from the obvious to the more subtle (culture wars and social media battles). The ultimate battle is between the hierarchical use of power that has been in effect for centuries pitted against a vision of a more collaborative approach. The battle lines are not as clear as some may think – the tentacles of patriarchy extend deep within all of our institutions and in most of our minds. We hold onto old ways of thinking and being without realizing it, often believing we are the change when we are really the resistance to change.
Mars, the astrological symbol of creative action and anger, will turn retrograde on December 6 with Neptune turning direct the next day. While change will come very quickly in the time ahead, in the short term we’re going to experience a slowdown. All our best efforts will be blocked. There is an opportunity to ask ourselves if these really are our best efforts? Or perhaps true transformation lies elsewhere.
